How to play Tile Temple
Tile Temple is Mahjong solitaire, also called Shanghai or tile matching. The tiles are stacked in a layout of several layers. Tap two identical tiles to remove them as a pair. Clear every tile to win the board.
You can only pick up a tile that is free. A tile is free when no tile lies on top of it, even partly, and its left side or its right side is open. Tiles that are not free are shaded slightly darker.
Which tiles match?
- Suits: dots (circles), bamboo (sticks) and characters, each numbered 1 to 9. Only the same suit and number match.
- Winds (East, South, West, North) and dragons (red, green and white): match identical tiles.
- Flowers: any flower matches any other flower.
- Seasons: any season matches any other season.
Hints, undo and shuffle
Hint highlights a matching free pair. Undo puts your last pairs back. Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles in a way that can still be cleared, at a cost of 15 seconds on your time. Every board starts solvable, because it is built by taking free pairs away from the finished layout.
Tips
- Work on the top layers and the long rows first: they block the most tiles.
- When three or four identical tiles are free, think about which pair frees the most tiles underneath.
- Do not take an easy pair at the edge if both tiles could later free something more important.
- If all four of a kind are free, take them both straight away.
Questions
Is Tile Temple real Mahjong?
It is Mahjong solitaire, a single-player puzzle that uses Mahjong tiles. It is different from the four-player Mahjong game of collecting sets.
Can every board be solved?
Yes. Each deal is generated so that a solution exists. If you get stuck, Undo or Shuffle will help you back on track.
How many layouts are there?
Five: Pyramid, Twin Towers, Temple Gate, Diamond and Great Hall. Clearing a board moves you on to the next one, and your best time on each is saved.
